An International performing artist, Fiona Malena tours frequently with her ensemble and as a guest artist worldwide; including Israel, Turkey, Ecuador, Germany, Canada, Spain, the United States, Mexico and the United Kingdom. She has collaborated on stage with many top Flamenco performers such as Ramón Martínez, El Torombo, Juan Ogalla and Pedro Sierra. Fiona received her training and formation in Seville, Spain under the mentorship of Farruquito, Concha Vargas and Isabel Bayón, among others.

Born in Calgary, Canada, Fiona has choreographed new works for over 10 years and most recently toured “Puertas” (Fiona Malena Flamenco Ensemble, 2013). Noted past performances include the Alcázar palaces of Jerez de la Frontera and Seville, Spain and various International Flamenco Festivals, where she has opened for esteemed dancers such as Rubén Olmo and Manuel Liñan. She is very active performing in Southern Spain with her ensemble and upcoming performances include Peña Flamenca Enrique el Mellizo in Cádiz as well as the Peña Flamenca Niño de la Alfalfa in Seville. Their performances have recently led to consecutive sold-out concerts in Spain as well as successful tours throughout the UK and Western Canada.

A defining quality of Fiona’s artistic trajectory is her work with unusual instrumentation and energized fusion. Her productions are heavily influenced by world music, integrating instruments such as the Hang Drum and Arabic Flutes in highly visual and imaginative dance works (“Puertas”, 2013). Recent concerts include performing with the Kaknüs Ensemble in Istanbul, Turkey and with guitarist John Opheim in Frankfurt, Germany. Currently Fiona is featured in a high profile dance video for a global ad campaign by the London-based company Molton Brown (Youtube video) and is working on a separate film project with London-based director Saulo Jamariqueli.

This September, the Fiona Malena Flamenco Ensemble will premiere their new production “La Cueva.” Inspired by the fantastical landforms of Cappadocia, Turkey and ancient Byzantine caves, “La Cueva” is a diverse and imaginative Flamenco production layered with rhythms and melodies of the mystical Sufi and Turkish-Ottoman tradition.
